Astigmatism

Astigmatism is a condition of the eye in which an irregular shaped cornea causes blurring of vision. In this condition the cornea, rather than being spherical, is more oval in shape. The surface of the cornea may have some areas which are flatter or steeper than others.

Mild astigmatism may be asymptomatic, however higher amounts of astigmatism may cause blurry vision, fatigue, or headaches. The condition is often present at birth and may occur along with other eye conditions such as myopia (nearsightedness) or hyperopia (farsightedness). The condition tends to remain the same over time, neither improving or deteriorating.

Typical symptoms of astigmatism may include distortion in areas of your field of vision, blurring of lines, eyestrain, and headaches.

Treatment options for the patient with astigmatism may include eyeglasses, contact lenses, or refractive laser eye surgery.
